We have all been hearing a lot about new media and social media these days . They seem to be all over, but understanding what it is and how to leverage it has some folks confused . This is a brief explanation of New Media and why we strongly suggest your business get involved.
Cone, Inc. a strategy and communications agency, defines new media in their 2009 New Media Study as:
dialogue among individuals or groups by way of technology-facilitated channels, such as social networks (e.g., Facebook); blogs; microblogs (e.g., Twitter); online games; mobile devices; photo-,audio- and video-sharing sites (e.g., Flickr, iTunes, YouTube); messageboards; etc. In some instances we also include Web sites and email.
New Media Marketing means being able to communicate with a huge network of people through many mediums . Some people doubt whether social media is simply a passing craze . Many believe it is a true shift in the world of marketing . The days of companies telling us what we want is over . The days of consumers dictating what they want, and hunting it out to get it, is here, and here for good .
There are many channels for New Media Marketing. Many small businesses would be best served by starting with a few of them at a time, and not adding more until they have figured out those. The best place to start would be to create or have created a blogsite. Blogsites are better than static websites because they’re easy to change , you don’t have to know computer code to start or change them, and they’re more search engine friendly than old-fashioned websites.
Your brand is your persona, company, your business . How is it being depicted on the world wide web ? Is it being depicted online at all? It’s like the Ken Kesey metaphor, “You’re either on the bus, or you’re off the bus.” Can you afford to miss the ride?
